Details of the event are as follows:
A Special Lecture was organised by the Department of English to commemorate International Women’s Day on 8.3.2025. The Second Issue of the Wall Magazine of the Department Mystic Curiosity (Issue 2. Theme: Gender) was inaugurated on International Women’s Day to showcase the creativity of students. On the occasion of International Women’s Day Prof. Ariktam Chatterjee, Assistant Professor and Head, Department of English, APJ Abdul Kalam College, Newtown Kolkata, delivered a talk on Remembering Simon Weil (1909-1943). Students displayed posters on gender issues and made badges in support of Gender equality. Participants included students from different departments and faculty members.
A Special talk on Postcolonialism was delivered by Professor Himadri Lahiri, Professor Netaji Subhash Open University, and former Professor and Head, Department of English and Culture Studies, University of Burdwan. A Poster exhibition entitled "From the Margins" was presented by the students of the Dept of English on 4.4.2025. Winners of the Poster competition themed “from the Margins” were

A Seminar on English Communication Skills was organised by IQAC in collaboration with the Department of English, GGDC, Singur. The theme of the talk was “Who is a 'good' language learner?” Speaker was Dr. Tanmoy Ghosh, Associate Professor, University of Calcutta on 22.4.2025. The talk emphasised on the four components of the Communication Skills.
Celebration of National Shakespeare’s Day on 23rd April 2025. Student performances by the students of Department of English Govt General Degree College, Singur to commemorate the birth and death anniversary of the Bard of Avon. Students designed simple costumes and props, and appeared online dressed as iconic Shakespearean characters such as Juliet, Isabella, Cleopatra, Prospero and Lord Orsino, and recited some of the most celebrated lines from the Bard’s plays with remarkable confidence and expression. Their performances brought Shakespeare’s timeless characters vividly to life and made the programme both entertaining and educational.

Activities of the Department of English 2025-2026
The students of the Department of English enthusiastically celebrated Pride Day on 9th July 2025 by organizing a vibrant event focused on awareness and creativity. Participants designed colourful posters highlighting themes of inclusivity, equality, and LGBTQ+ rights, which were displayed in the department.
Students of the Dept of English, GGDC, Singur, visited APJ Abdul Kalam College, Newtown, Kolkata on 18th July 2025 to celebrate 250th Birth Anniversary of Jane Austen as part of the Memorandum of Understanding between two colleges. The students presented a poster on "Austen's Worlds: Love, Society, and Wit" and read out an excerpt from Austen's letter to Cassandra written on 2nd March 1814 to commemorate 250th Birth anniversary of Jane Austen. Three teachers from the Department, Dr. Anindita Chatterjee, HOD, Dr. Parama Ghosh and Dr. Ramit Das accompanied the students. The students who participated were Rajib Ghosh, Saheli Dhar and Abharajit Sinha Roy (semester 5).
The students of the Department of English participated in the Students’ Seminar on India: Past, Present and Future organised by the Department of History on 12th August 2025. Students of the Department of English excelled at multiple levels. Out of the all the papers the Best paper was awarded to Juthika Koley and Abhrajit Sinha Ray for their presentation on Nation in Her Words: Poetry of Sarojini Naidu and Toru Dutt in the Literature Category and Pritha Ghosh and Bidisha Mal for their paper on History is a Woman's Body: An Alternative Perspective on the Partition in the History Category. An Alternative Perspective on the Partition in the History Category Second prize won by Rajib Ghosh and Saheli Das for their presentation on "Historical Odyssey into Art: Social Aspirations and Cultural Implications of the Folk Art Form of Alpona". Mon Mallik, Priyanka Bera, Rema Patra and Parna Koley put up commendable presentations as well.
A Seminar-cum-Workshop on “Interview Skills” was organized by the Department of English as part of the Soft Skill and Communication Skill Enhancement project for the students on 25th November 2025. Dr. Avijit Pramanik, Assistant Professor of English, WBES, Ramkrishna Mahato Govt. Engineering College, Purulia was the resource person. The programme aimed to prepare undergraduate students for real-life professional situations in alignment with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes holistic and skill-based education. The session covered topics like types of interviews, frequently asked questions, effective strategies for answering them and so on. Most importantly, the speaker emphasized on soft skills and non-verbal communication, including body language, posture, and eye contact, as essential elements of successful self-presentation. The seminar was followed by a workshop on mock interview, which proved to be the most impactful part of the programme. Students participated actively and experienced real-life interview situations.
The Department of English organised a One-Day Seminar on Shakespeare on 10th December 2025. Dr Subhajit Sengupta, Professor, Department of English and Culture Studies, The University of Burdwan delivered an insightful lecture on the use of symbols in Macbeth. With clarity and passion, he analysed blood, the dagger, darkness, and the witches as recurring motifs that drive the play’s themes of guilt, ambition, and fate. Following the talk, students presented powerful solo performances. Standout acts included Lady Macbeth’s soliloquy (by Bidisha Mal), Cleopatra’s regal lament (by Sampurna Chatterjee), Isabella’s plea for mercy (by Mon Mallik), Caliban’s island curse (by Rajib Ghosh), Prospero’s farewell to magic (by Sk Sakibuddin), Duke Orsino’s passionate craving for music (Abharajit Sinha Roy), Othello’s anxiety (by Nayan Chakraborty) and Viola’s admonition of Malvolio (by Pritha Ghosh), Witches rant (by Juthika Koley).The performances blended emotion, voice modulation, and costumes, bringing Shakespeare’s characters vividly alive and earning enthusiastic applause from faculty and peers alike.
The students of the Department of English went to an enriching educational trip to the esteemed Chandernagore Heritage Museum on 15th December 2025. This initiative undertaken to align with the core tenets of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes experiential learning, holistic development, and a deep-rooted appreciation for Indian knowledge systems and cultural heritage. The Chandernagore Heritage Museum, located within the historic Chandernagore Government College premises, offers a unique glimpse into the region's rich history, particularly its French colonial past and the Indian independence movement. Since the NEP encourages using local heritage resources as ‘Centres of Learning,’ moving beyond traditional classroom instruction to provide a more immersive and practical understanding of history, art, and architecture the trip provided an inspiring and transformative experience for the students. Twenty-one students from semester III and 18 students from Semester IV joined the trip along with four faculty members from the Department of English (Dr Anindita Chatterjee, Dr. Ramit Das, Dr. Parama Basu and Dr. Sutista Ghosh)
The Department of English made presentations on the topic ‘Shakespeare and his world’ for the
Student Exhibition on 17th and 18th December 2025. There were models and charts prepared by the students on
- Shakespeare's Tragedies
- Shakespeare's Comedies
- Shakespeare's Tragicomedies.
A Central model was set up which was a replica of the Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London. Students of all the semesters were involved in the two day exhibition. The faculty members mentored the students. The Department secured the First position in the Exhibition.
The Department of English in collaboration with the IQAC organised an Invited Lecture on The Return to Nature: Impact of French Revolutionary Thoughts on English Romanticism on 29th January 2026. The Speaker was Dr Sayantan Bose, Assistant Professor, Department of History, GGDC, Singur. In a lucid and engaging presentation, Bose explored how the ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity from the French Revolution inspired the English Romantics’ emphasis on emotion, individualism, and a profound return to nature. He drew insightful connections between revolutionary zeal and the poetic visions of Wordsworth, Coleridge, Shelley, and Keats, highlighting nature as both a source of solace and a symbol of freedom against industrialization and tyranny. Bose particularly elaborated on Wordsworth, describing him as the high priest of Romanticism who celebrated nature as a moral and spiritual teacher in poems like Tintern Abbey and The Prelude.

Celebration of International Women’s Day by the Department of English in collaboration with ICC and IQAC of the Government General Degree College, Singur. Students of the Department of English actively participated by making greeting cards and crafting beautiful pink ribbon badges, symbolizing solidarity and awareness for women’s health and rights. The event fostered a spirit of unity, reflection, and celebration, leaving a memorable impact on all present.

Mystic Curiosity was organised. The magazine highlighted inspiring content on:
- Women in Science: Achievements of women scientists
- Women in Sports: Stories of female athletes who have excelled despite challenges and the need for equal opportunities in sports.
- Women in Literature: Contributions of women writers, poets, and their role in shaping societal perspectives on gender.
Celebration of World Theatre Day was organised for the first time in the college in collaboration with the IQAC by the Department of English, GGDC Singur on 27th March 2026. The students put up two performances on stage. The first one was a mime-based performance of the “Seven Ages of Man” from Shakespeare’s As You Like It. Eight Students of semester IV and VI (Saheli Dhar, Juthika Koley, Tiyasa Koyal, Sumana Paul, Pritha Ghosh, Parna Koley, Woomme Kulsum, Priyanka Bera), presented the classical musical act depicting seven stages of human life as enumerated by the character of Jacques in the Shakespearean comedy. The next performance was the presentation of a soliloquy by Lady Macbeth’s by Bidisha Mal of Semester IV.
In keeping with its annual tradition, the Department of English, in collaboration with the IQAC, organised an online celebration of National Shakespeare Day on 23rd April 2026. Dr. Rumpa Das, Principal of Maheshtala College, Kolkata delivered a talk on Shakespeare in the 21st Century. The lecture was followed by a lively cultural segment presented by the students of the Department of English. Students appeared online dressed as iconic Shakespearean characters such as Juliet, Isabella, Cleopatra, Prospero and Lord Orsino, and recited some of the most celebrated lines from the Bard’s plays. The main intention behind the celebration of the World Theatre Day this year was to emphasise how theatre is more than just entertainment—it is a vital space for empathy, dialogue, and building bridges across divides and to depict how from grand stages to intimate performances, theatre continues to illuminate the human experience and nurture a more peaceful world.

Achievements
The English Department of the college has consistently demonstrated academic excellence through the remarkable contributions of its faculty members. Over the years, faculty members have published insightful research articles in reputed, peer-reviewed national and international journals, covering diverse areas such as diaspora studies, ecocriticism and Animal Studies, pandemic studies, Critical Race Theory, gender studies, food studies and cultural gerontology. In addition, faculty members have edited and authored influential books with established academic presses, enriching the scholarly discourse in English studies and enhancing the department’s reputation as a hub for serious literary research.
Students of the department have also brought laurels through their outstanding performances and achievements. They have achieved remarkable success in national-level examinations, paving the way for future academic careers. Tandrima Hazra, who graduated from the department in 2022, secured JRF in UGC NET 2025. Notably, the department has produced university toppers, with Dishantika Mallick securing the first rank in the M.A. English examination of Burdwan University in 2021. Asmita Chatterjee was awarded a certificate for her poster “Women are not product made by society, they are irreplaceable individual parts of it” at the “Poster making competition” for Jadavpur University Women’s Conclave 2025 in collaboration with Jadavpur University School of Women’s Studies. Monopriya Dey secured the third position in the event of “Recitation” in the Inter College cultural competition organized by the Women’s Cell under the aegis of IQAC on the occasion of International Women’s Day 2025. These accomplishments reflect the department’s commitment to nurturing talent and fostering a rigorous academic environment.
The Department conducted an invited lecture in September 2015 conducted by Prof. Saswati Saha from Sikkim Central University on 24.07.2015. Ariktam Chatterjee published a book of translated poems, attended international seminars in various capacities, and has been included as an associate member in a collaborative Indo-Danish program in developing historical studies in Serampore. Ariktam Chatterjee completed his Ph.D. in Cultural Studies from the Centre of Studies in Social Sciences Calcutta, Patuli. The teachers of the department have co-authored a highly appreciated introductory book on Classical Literature as recommended by the CBCS format of Burdwan University. Parama Basu has authored book introduction on texts related to Victorian literature.
